Heartland Eats and Treats — A Founder’s Reflection

05/09/2025

Hello, food enthusiasts and community champions!

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Founder’s Column. Today, I want to take you on a journey through the heart of the Heartland and explore how Heartland Eats and Treats came to be more than just a project—it’s a passion-driven mission to shine a spotlight on the local culinary treasures we have right here at home. From dreams of producing high-quality commercials to fostering a vibrant food culture, there’s so much to discuss. Let’s dive in!

“Why can’t our local restaurants have the same spotlight?”

Founder – Jonathan Fritzler

The Seed of an Idea

Years ago, while watching flashy commercials for big-name chains, a thought took root: “Why can’t our local restaurants have the same spotlight?” That question was both a challenge and a call to action. My initial vision for Heartland Eats and Treats was to lend my video production skills to help local eateries tell their stories in a compelling way, much like the ads for Burger King or Red Lobster. This led to the creation of a dedicated service under my video agency, Storyteller Productions, aimed at creating equally enticing content for the unsung heroes of our dining scene.

Growing the Vision

The evolution of Heartland Eats and Treats has not been in its scope, but in its impact. Over the years, we’ve expanded from producing commercials to curating a vibrant community around food and culture through various channels. Our Web TV series and written guides not only showcase the culinary delights of our region but also delve into the stories behind them. It’s been heartening to see local chefs and business owners recognize the value in what we do—not just another column in the newspaper, but a movement to celebrate and empower our local scene.

Building Trust and Community

One of the biggest challenges has been earning the trust of our community partners. Initially, it was surprising how quickly many came to embrace our mission once they understood what Heartland Eats and Treats aimed to achieve. We’re not just promoting food; we’re fostering a deeper appreciation for our area’s rich culture and hospitality. I believe there’s a treasure trove of experiences waiting right in our backyards, and through our platform, we’re providing a centralized space for discovering and sharing these hidden gems.

Whats next and where it’s going.

In summary, while Heartland Eats and Treats has a lot of parts, it’s more than just a platform—it’s a philosophy, a commitment to unearthing and celebrating the hidden culinary gems of the Heartland. We’re here to enrich and encourage while promoting the vibrant food culture that makes our community so unique. As you explore the local scene, I invite you to join in this journey; visit a new restaurant, try an unfamiliar dish, and share your experiences with us.

Let’s continue to grow and celebrate our community together!

Thank you for being part of this adventure.

When I first started putting together Heartland Eats and Treats, the idea was simple: Create something that could celebrate local flavors, places, and people — without turning into another full-time job.
